Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi Airport is situated 30km east of Bangkok and is a well modernised airport. Flights to Bangkok depart from major airports in the UK and flight times are approximately 12 hours. Transfers from the airport to your chosen hotel take between 40 and 90 minutes and are best done via taxi as prices are very cheap. Traffic in Bangkok can be a problem with the roads being very busy during the day. There is a sky train in service that takes you to any of the fantastic shopping facilities and museums and is a lot more efficient than getting around by car.
A holiday to Bangkok would not be complete without a visit to one of the many fascinating temples located in and around the city. With a staggering 400 or more temples dotted around in Bangkok, it would be extremely difficult to fit them all in, however a must visit is ‘Wat Pho’. The largest temple in Bangkok is home to the famous 46 meter long, gold reclining Buddha. This immense statue is decorated with gold plating on his body and mother of pearl on his eyes and the soles of his feet. Bursting with history, this temple is a delight to visit. Keep an eye out for the onsite Thai massage school and wandering fortune tellers to add a little more culture to your trip.
Thai food is very fresh and aromatic, which means street stalls, noodle shops, and open air markets are in abundance. Tom yang kun (shrimp) and tom yang gai (chicken) are spicy hot soups, and the true signature dish of Thailand. Many holidaymakers are afraid to taste these dishes as a number of the ingredients can be quite off-putting by European standards, but they are delicacies in Thailand and are well worth trying.
