Cancun is a coastal city in Mexico's easternmost state Quintana Roo, which lies on the Yucatán Peninsula and is best known as the Mexican Caribbean. Cancun is divided into two separate areas; Cancun City, the residential area and Cancun Island, which is known as the Tourist Zone or the Hotel Zone. The island of Cancun is connected to the mainland by two bridges, with the main tourist district located on a 12 km peninsula which sticks out into the Caribbean Sea. Cancun holidays offer pristine beaches that lie along the amazing coastline, surrounded by beautiful warm translucent waters; it’s no surprise that it manages to keep its position as the top tourist resort in Mexico. When on holidays in Cancun, the main concentration is just relaxing and soaking up the rays of the Caribbean sun on one of the fabulous beaches. For something more upbeat, try the Nichupté Lagoon area, which is excellent for boating excursions and jet-ski jungle tours, the Riviera Maya is also fantastic for snorkelling and parasailing. Shopping is a good way to spend your holidays to Cancun, the town has developed into a shoppers’ paradise with American-style malls and plenty of traditional Mexican markets, selling everything from designer clothing and duty-free perfumes to locally made handicrafts. Flea markets such as The Zocalo in the centre of the Hotel Zone and Xel Ha in the older section of the city have become popular with tourists in recent years. Cancun holidays are well-known as a non-stop party town, and the town offers an assortment of entertainment, from clubs and discos, to quieter bars and traditional Mexican bars playing Mariachi music.
Food and drink
When on Cancun holidays there is always plenty to entertain, although restaurants and bars in the hotel zone tend to be rather expensive compared with the downtown area and other Mexican resorts, tourist will be able to find many well-known places to eat and have fun including many American franchises. Downtown Cancún offers more cultural characteristics; there are cuban and salsa type bars and restaurants, especially along Yaxchilan Avenue which has many bars and discos.
