Lunn Poly holidays were hugely popular with the British public until the retirement of the brand name in 2004. Despite the fact that the Lunn Poly name is no longer used by the parent company Thomson, many people still have a fondness for the brand and a vast number of Internet searches are carried out looking for the Lunn Poly name, often mistakenly calling it Lunn Polly. Lunn Poly has a long history in the travel market, with its two founding companies having started their operations in the late 19th century. The Polytechnic Touring Association (which put the ‘poly’ in Lunn Poly) was created as a means of organising travel for the attendees of the Royal Polytechnic Institute, which would much later become the University of Westminster. So successful were they that they later began organising tours for non-polytechnic members and so it was that one half of Lunn Poly was born.
The ‘Lunn’ in the name Lunn Poly was derived from the other company that formed in the 1890s, Sir Henry Lunn Travel. Sir Henry, a former missionary began organising religious and educational tours to such places as Adelboden and Wengen in Switzerland, which contributed to the popularity of winter sports and health retreats, creating a precursor to the package holidays that would later follow. Lunn Poly became Lunn Poly when it was bought by the British Eagle Group and the two companies were combined into the now familiar name in 1965. Lunn Poly went from strength to strength and was eventually acquired by the Thomson Travel Group in the 1970s. By 1990 Lunn Poly had several hundred high street stores throughout the UK and Lunn Poly holidays were part of the culture of British package holidays abroad.
A successful TV advertising campaign only served to consolidate the now house-hold name that was Lunn Poly. The TV commercials were memorable for the phrase “Lunn Poly? Get away”, which was spoken by one protagonist, only to see their subject vanish into thin air and wind up on a beach somewhere. In 2004 Lunn Poly ‘got away’ for good, as the brand was finally retired by TUI UK, which then owned Thomson, in order to promote the Thomson brand more prominently on the high street. Although holidays with Lunn Poly are technically no longer available, the spirit of the company has been maintained within the TUI Travel PLC portfolio, with thousands of superb holiday destinations that Lunn Poly customers can search, compare and book online right here at travel.co.uk.
