Flights to the Maldives tend to be flown from London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Manchester. The airport here is called Male International Airport and is the gateway to these breathtakingly beautiful islands. The airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the region and actually sits on its very own island. Due to the geographical nature of the Maldives, 99% sea and only 1% land, the majority of transportation is done via boats and sea planes. In the Maldives hotels are of an extremely high standard and offer first class service so it’s hard for tourists to pull themselves away. However if you wish to discover neighbouring islands, island hopping trips by ferries are widely available as are local charter boats to hire.
A popular reason for holidaymakers flocking to the Maldives is because the Maldives is famed for its rare underwater beauty. The variety of colourful life underwater has fascinated divers and snorkelers since the Maldives was discovered as a diving destination. The Maldives has some of the best dive sites in the world and many tourists visit the Maldives repeatedly for the sole purpose of diving. If you prefer to shop till you drop then head to the ‘Chaandanee Magu,’ a major commercial centre situated in Male, it is known for its popularity with those wishing to buy imported goods. There’s an array of souvenir shops selling a host of authentic mementos perfect to take home to friends and family.
The local cuisine in the Maldives revolves around fish and rice. A typical meal will have a helping of rice served with local fish. Barracuda and tuna are the preferred fish here and are often prepared in spicy curries. The food is usually washed down with a hot cup of black tea, being an Islamic country, alcohol is prohibited and only available within tourist areas.
