Best known of Sardinia's three major airports, Alghero Fertilia Airport is beginning to see more and more British tourists pass through its gates, especially with budget airline Ryanair now operating cheap flights to Alghero from Dublin, East Midlands, Liverpool and Stansted Airport. The airport is situated 11km away from Alghero therefore transfers are very short. Taxis and buses are widely available outside the arrivals and the local taxi drivers provide efficient and cheap transfers.
Due to Alghero boasting such spectacular scenery, it is definitely worth hiring a car. Hit the coast road between Alghero and Bosa and marvel in the delight of the surroundings. This road is positioned between Boas and Alghero and offers breathtaking panoramic views. The road winds its way through a beautiful unspoilt environment and has stretches of picturesque countryside to admire. Take a couple of beach towels and perhaps make a couple of stops on your journey and sample some of the more secluded areas of the beach and top up your tan in your own personal surroundings.
You will discover that food and drink is quite traditional on Alghero holidays, with the majority of eateries serving traditional cuisine, which is ideal if you it wish to try the local Italian fare. A popular ingredient here is cheese, with local cheese having a Parmesan texture to it, however it is a lot stronger. As for the wine in Alghero, again much of it is local produce that is a delight to sample.
