Flight, Hotel & Package Holiday Bargains in the Greek Islands

Summary

The Greek Islands are blessed with fascinating historical sites, charming culture and warm, friendly people. Many visitors enjoy Greek island hopping around the Cyclades islands to places such as Mykonos, Naxos and Santorini and around the Dodecanese islands such as Kos and Rhodes. There are around 1400 Greek Islands in the Aegean, Ionian and eastern Mediterranean Sea, although less than 200 are thought to be inhabited and fewer still are actually regarded as tourist destinations. Top Greek island holidays include Greece’s largest island Crete, the sun kissed island of Rhodes, the party island of Mykonos and the beautifully scenic and charming island of Santorini. The Greek islands are littered with incredible ancient ruins such as the Minoan palace at Knossos in Crete and the temple of Dionysus in Naxos, which add a special cultural interest to Greek island holidays. In the Ionian Sea, the popular islands of Zante (or Zakynthos), Kefalonia and Corfu feature some superb beaches and stunning unspoiled countryside. In Zante, the fertile plains and sandy beaches are complimented by a great range of resorts, from laidback family locations such as Tsilivi to lively clubbing destinations such as Laganas.

Getting there and getting around

Most of the popular Greek islands have their own airport, which includes Zante, Mykonos, Kos, Rhodes, Kefalonia and the two Crete airports, Heraklion and Chania. Due to the huge popularity of holidays to Greek islands, there are several charter companies offering flights to the Greek islands from regional airports in the UK, including Thomas Cook, Thomson, First Choice and Excel Airways. There is an excellent ferry service that provides transport between the Greek islands. Cheap transport is readily available throughout the islands in the form of taxi transport and minibuses. In Santorini there is even the option of a donkey ride up the steep hill from the ferry port, although this is not for the fainthearted.

Things to do

The Greek islands have a hugely diverse appeal, from top nightlife orientated resorts such as Laganas or Faliraki in Rhodes, to relaxing family destinations in Zante, Corfu and Crete. As destinations for cheap holidays, Greek islands represent great value for money. The Greek islands offer tonnes of cultural interest, fantastic beaches and water sports galore, such as scuba diving, water skiing and parasailing along with plenty of activities for children. Greek island holidays give you the unique opportunity to take advantage of the excellent ferry system to visit neighbouring islands and see even more of this fabulous country. One of the must-see attractions of the Cyclades islands is the magnificent panoramic views from the hillsides of Santorini. In Crete, a walk through the Samaria Gorge offers dramatic scenes of rocky paths, flower-strewn hillsides and breathtaking vistas.

Food and drink

Mealtimes in the Greek islands are not a thing to be hurried. The Greeks utilise fresh seasonal produce to produce flavoursome dishes called mezze, which are small plates of food, much like Spanish tapas, consisting of fresh bread, creamy feta, olives and stuffed vine leaves or ‘dolmades’, containing pine nuts, currents and rice. Mezze can also contain marinated seafood such as mackerel and calamari. Olive oil plays a huge role in Greek island cooking, as it does in many Mediterranean destinations and there are some delicious fresh salads to try. Larger resorts have become accustomed to the delicate British palate and a range of international cuisine is available in restaurants throughout the islands.
