A popular destination for city breaks, Amsterdam is a lively cosmopolitan city in the Netherlands. Named after the dam in the River Amstel, which flows into the city from the south, most visitors to Amsterdam stick to the compact city centre, an area that basically reflects old Amsterdam as it was in the mid-nineteenth century. Many people have enjoyed Amsterdam holidays for the relaxed, liberal attitudes that the city has traditionally adopted, particularly in relation to marijuana use. Public and official policies have hardened a little in recent years to reflect the fact that Amsterdam is a tolerant city, but not one where ‘anything goes’, however none of the fun of Amsterdam city breaks has been lost in making it safer. In addition to the lively nightlife, holidays to Amsterdam have a cultural side that can easily be overlooked. There are a number of fantastic museums and galleries in Amsterdam that can round off the perfect European city break adventure.
