The Balearic Islands are situated off the east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea between the Spanish mainland and North Africa. The islands of Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca are familiar names in the British holiday market with millions of tourists each year booking holidays to the Balearic Islands to enjoy the superb climate of these beautiful sunshine isles. The largest and perhaps best-known Balearic island is Majorca, which has been attracting British visitors since the holiday boom of the 1960s and is still one of the firm favourites to this day thanks to its great infrastructure and its diverse range of resorts such as the family-friendly Cala D’or or ‘Golden Coast’ and the equally popular but much more 18-30 orientated Magaluf.
The second largest of the Balearic Islands is Menorca (Minorca), which is considered one of the most beautiful and unspoilt islands in the whole of the Mediterranean. Menorca also has more beaches than the rest of the Balearic Islands put together, including the fine white sands of Punta Prima or the charming sandy cove of Binibequer, where you can try your hand at a few water sports or simply lie back on a sun lounger. Although Balearic Islands holidays in Ibiza are often associated with the huge bouncing nightclubs and party atmosphere, the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Ibiza Town and the quiet charm of nearby Talamanca, with its soft sandy beach, are as much a part of Ibiza holidays as the pulsating nightlife of resorts such as San Antonio.
Holidays to the Balearic Islands are well served by a range of local and regional UK airports including Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester. The Balearic Islands can be booked through many of the big tour operators such as Thomson, Thomas Cook, Mytravel and First Choice. Flights to the Balearic Islands fly into Palma in Majorca, Mahon in Menorca and Ibiza Airport. Like most Spanish destinations local public transport tends to be cheap and efficient in Balearics resorts, while taxis are generally well priced for getting around and between resorts. Taxis, buses and private shuttles are the usual means of transport for airport runs.
The Balearic Islands have a huge amount to offer as traditional sun, sea and sangria holidays in Spain, but they also have a great deal more besides. There are hundreds of sandy beaches, quiet coves and superb views along the coastlines of Menorca, Ibiza and Majorca. Balearic Islands holidays are enjoyed by many visitors simply for that great combination of warm weather, superb beaches and water sports such as diving, snorkelling, water skiing and parasailing. There is also a good blend of culture and traditional Spanish charm in locations such as Ibiza Town and the Majorcan capital Palma, with its fantastic architecture and fashionable café culture. There is no shortage of nightlife in the Balearic Islands, especially in Ibiza, where some of the massive super-clubs including Pascha, Eden and the chilled-out after party atmosphere of Café del Mar attract the world’s biggest DJs.
There is no shortage of variety when it comes to eating out in the Balearic Islands. Restaurants and cafés offer a wide range of local and international cuisine as would typically appeal to the British holidaymaker. The most famous foodstuff to have its origin in the Balearic Islands is the salsa mahonesa (Mahon sauce), or what we now know as mayonnaise. Majorca is known for a hearty soup made from either rabbit or pork mixed with green vegetables and thickened with breadcrumbs. The Balearic Islands have plenty of great fish dishes to sample thanks to the abundance of small fishing villages dotted amongst the resorts on each of the islands.
