The fantastic year-round climate of the Canary Islands is almost certainly the main attraction for British holidaymakers. The magnificent Canaries are warm, sunny and dry; three reasons why so many Brits book holidays to the Canary Islands year on year. The Canary Islands are a cluster of Spanish-governed islands consisting of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuereventura, Gran Canaria and La Palma, and have become synonymous with great value all-year-round cheap holidays. Canary Islands breaks are popular with families, couples and the 18-30 crowds, with a whole range of resorts that will appeal to different needs. Families enjoy Canary Island holidays in Tenerife’s quieter resorts such as Los Cristianos and San Agustin, while the more the lively resorts such as Playa de Las Americas and Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.
As one of the most popular year-round destinations for package holidays, Canary Islands breaks are available from a wide range of regional UK airports, including Durham Tees Valley, Doncaster, East Midlands and Exeter, as well bigger airports such as Glasgow, Gatwick and Manchester. Tenerife has an airport in both the north and the south of the island, although the south receives many more flights. Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are also well served by a number of regional UK airports and tour operators including Thomas Cook and MyTravel. Like most Spanish resorts, the Canary Island resorts are easy to get around via taxis and local bus services.
The most popular resort in Tenerife is the energetic Playa de Las Americas. The crowds flock to Las Americas to enjoy the rows of bars and nightclubs and the lively atmosphere in venues like Cream and Tramps. In neighbouring Los Cristianos, a much more low-key atmosphere attracts couples and families to enjoy the bars and restaurants along the seafront. Holidays in the Canary Islands are enjoyed throughout the year, as temperatures rarely fall below the low 20s even in winter. Some of the beaches in the Canary Islands appear to be black, due to the Island’s volcanic origins, but the golden Saharan sandy beaches of Fuerteventura are perfect for sun seekers and water sports enthusiasts. Jandia Beach in the south of Fuerteventura attracts crowds of windsurfers, who enjoy the warm breeze that blows across the water. Boasting four of Spain’s seven national nature reserves, the incredible Mars-like inner landscapes of the Canaries make jeep safaris a fantastic day out on holidays to Canary Islands such as Tenerife and Fuerteventura. Tenerife also boasts the highest peak in the whole of Spain, the 12,198ft Mount Teide, which acts as another great day out.
There is a wide choice of Mediterranean style cuisine available in the Canaries as you would expect from any other Spanish holidays. In Canary Islands restaurants, the food has strong influences from the Spanish mainland, but has also adapted to the needs of the tourist industry, and so there are plenty of options that suit even the most selective British tastes. Traditional Canary Islands dishes include Canarian potatoes in the spicy Mojo sauce and several excellent fish dishes.
