Getting there and getting around

Flights to Chania fly into the largest Greek island of Crete. The duration of Chania flights from the UK is approximately 4 hours 15 minutes and the transfer from the airport to the town is only around 9 miles. Cheap holidays to Chania can often be booked using low-cost airlines or charter flights. Once in the resort the most beneficial way to explore is by cycling and walking around the picturesque streets, car hire is great for exploring further afield but watch out for the bumpy roads in the more remote areas.

Things to do

The beach is one of the main attractions on package holidays to Chania, with lovely sandy shores and warm waters it’s clear to see why. Water sports are readily available at the beach, you can try your hand at wind surfing and snorkelling on the beautiful beach at Stalis or the busier Malia beach, there are plenty of beaches to visit. As Crete is the largest of the Greek islands there are plenty of trips to take part in on a last minute holiday to Chania. Visit the Elafonissi lagoon, just over an hour away, it is said to be one of the best beaches known in Crete or head to the magnificent Samaria Gorge, the largest in Europe and second in the world to the Grand Canyon. Take a stunning walk along the rocky path that cuts through the mountains, the wildlife is fantastic the whole atmosphere here is one of amazement at the natural beauty. For the children, take a trip to the water park and enjoy a fun-filled day splashing around and shooting down slides. There is also a small zoo and beautiful gardens to explore great for amusing the little ones. Nightlife is fantastic in Chania, there are plenty of modern stylish bars at the waterfront or find little welcoming tavernas for a more traditional night up in the narrow streets.

Food and drink

Chania holidays have fabulous mouth-watering cuisine. The traditional fresh food is definitely worth a try. Some dishes you might like to try are: freshly caught fish, bean soup, fresh Greek salads served with lashings of olive oil and feta cheese, homemade soft and crusty bread with a side of olives or try a fabulous meat gyros. There are so many flavours it will leave you wanting more. International foods are also available but why not go for the Greek hamburger bifteki with patates psites- roast potatoes with lemon, somewhat more nutritious than a fast food meal.
