It is the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the largest in the world. It stands at a staggering 3,326m high and is therefore the highest mountain in Italy. The last known eruption was on 4 September 2007 when Mount Etna violently erupted, shooting lava 400m into the air along with strong winds that sent ash and smoke into the underlying towns.
