Greece holidays have become one of the mainstays of European getaways for the British holidaymaker. The reason is simple, because cheap Greece holidays have such widespread appeal, offering fantastic family holidays along with cultural sight seeing trips and lively clubbing destinations. From the stunning ancient ruins of the Acropolis in Athens or the Minoan palace at Knossos in Crete, to the fabulous sandy beaches, there is simply nowhere else on Earth quite like Greece for holidays. Travel to Greek Islands in the Cyclades to enjoy anything from a relaxing beach holiday in the traditional surroundings of islands such as Naxos and the spectacular Santorini, to all-night clubbing destinations on islands such as Mykonos. The ancient Greeks gave us democracy, philosophy and some incredible works of art and architecture, which in many cases have survived at least partially to this day, giving us a fascinating insight into the culture of ancient Greece. Accommodation options are plentiful, with a fantastic assortment of villas, apartments and hotels. Greece holiday flights are available from a wide range of local and regional UK airports and many of the top resorts also have their own regional airports.
Holidays to Greece have been a well established part of the UK travel industry and many people book cheap holiday flights to Greece and then take advantage of the excellent Greek ferry service to travel around the islands. On the islands taxis and buses are quite reasonably priced and some accommodations even offer free shuttle buses from the ports to the hotel in order to tempt your business. From Athens there is a train service running right down to the port at Piraeus from which you can start your Greece holiday adventure using the ferry service to islands including Mykonos, Paros and Crete.
Greece holidays should also be about letting your hair down and having fun, and whether that means hitting the bars and nightclubs with partying revellers in top resorts such as Faliraki in Rhodes, or enjoying a few water sports in the warm, clear coastal waters of islands such as Kos, Greece holidays have it all. Of course Greece is world renowned for its incredible history and every island has its own story to tell. Stay in the beautiful Venetian harbour town of Chania in Crete and take a day trip to the stunning Samaria gorge or visit the ancient ruined palace of Knossos. You can find quiet, traditional towns and villages in Greece, on islands such as Kefalonia along with the bouncing nightclub-filled resorts, and a whole range of things in between. Islands will often have quiet resorts close to bustling towns, so you can relax in a peaceful environment and go out on the town whenever you feel like it, giving you the perfect mix for your Greece holiday. The island of Zante for instance features the popular resort of Laganas, which attracts a big 18-30 crowd, but stay in the town of Aghios Sostis along the coast and you would never even know it was there as you enjoy traditional Greek dancing in the beachfront tavernas.
Holidays in Greece have a great culinary heritage and there are lots of mouth watering dishes to be savoured. Familiar Greek food such as olives, feta cheese and yoghurt feature in lots of local specialities and many restaurants are quite cheap. In most resorts there is a good choice of restaurants offering typical local fare, such as speciality seafood dishes and fresh local produce. Greece holiday food is very much Mediterranean in style, featuring plenty of olive oil and fresh, fragrant flavours that are best washed down with some Greek wine. Most restaurants cater for a wide range of tastes and feature menus that offer something for even the pickiest British palate. Try a glass of the sometimes eye-watering ouzo, which is widely available throughout the islands and is worth having a sip of at the very least to say that you have tried it!
