Getting there and getting around

Flights to Hersonissos fly into the island of Crete and have an approximate flying time of 4 hours 15 minutes from the UK. Many charter and low-cost airlines operate Hersonissos flights, including First Choice, Thomas Cook and Easyjet. The range of operators makes it ideal to find a cheap holiday to Hersonissos flying from the UK. Once in Crete the transfer time to the resort is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. The best way to make your way around the resort is to go exploring on foot, or public transport is readily available and fairly easy to use.

Some excursions that you might like to try include, the ancient Minoan Palace at Knossos, visiting Heraklion’s archaeological museum, the Samaria Gorge or the island of Spinalonga. For those who like to go shopping there are frequent buses into the capital Heraklion, a truly great capital offering many sights to see and shops to explore. The town of Hersonissos is a charming old town with beautiful old little narrow streets and welcoming tavernas. Nearby villages of Piskopiano and Koutouloufari are perfect to sit and take in the traditional Greek atmosphere and some lovely views of the picturesque landscapes. Although holidays in Hersonissos are quieter than that of the bustling Malia nearby, the resort still offers an upbeat tempo with lively bars and restaurants on the water’s edge, perfect for partying the night away.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine is usually served up at extremely good value for money, Hersonissos holidays are no different. There is a wide selection of tavernas and restaurants serving mouth-watering traditional dishes. Some that you may see on the menu are; dolmades stuffed vine leaves, stifado- beef, veal or rabbit stew or the delicious soutzoukakia- meatballs in succulent tomato sauce and fresh feta salad, with a tongue tingling shot of ouzo to wash it down. International menus can be found in many of the restaurants and bars but when in Greece it would be a shame to pass up on their delectable traditional dishes.
