Holidays in Kalymnos have only quite recently become a focus for tourism and present a pleasantly authentic Greek Island holiday. Kalymnos is located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, just north of Kos, and is part of the Dodecanese Island chain. Kalymnos was formally well-known for its sponge fishing industry, and is considered to be one of the wealthiest Greek Islands. However, since the decline of sponge fishing Kalymnos holidays have started to become more popular with UK visitors, as the island opens itself up to tourism. The island’s capital Pothia features some striking Italianate architecture, including an impressive silver-domed cathedral. Dotted around the island you can also find attractive stone-built mansions, charming little churches, secluded beaches and lots of picturesque scenery, including limestone cliffs and citrus groves.

Holidays to Kalymnos require the use of ferries or internal flights. Although there are no direct flights to Kalymnos from the UK, there are straightforward links from other Greek airports via internal flights or even the excellent Greek ferry service. Pothia, the capital, is the main port on the island and is the best place to catch ferries to other islands, should you wish to try island hopping on your holidays to Kalymnos. Buses depart from Pothia to various other towns and resorts around the island. You can also hire motorbikes from rental offices down by the waterfront, which probably present the best way of getting around the island. Excursion boats can take you on trips around the impressive coastline to get a different perspective on your Kalymnos holiday.
Kalymnos holidays combine beaches with wonderful views. Northwest of Pothia, relax by the beach at Myrties, where you’ll find some fine sands and a handful of pleasant little tavernas and cafes. Alternatively, head south of Pothia to Akti for a fine sandy beach, crystal clear waters and a nice little tavern. On the hill above Pothia is the quaint little monastery of Agios Savvas, with some nice frescoes and very impressive panoramic views above the town and out to sea. The limestone cliffs and caves of the island have made holidays in Kalymnos very popular with rock climbers, and the island attracts climbers from all over the world.
Should you choose Kalymnos holidays for your next Greek island break, you can expect the usual top notch seafood and fresh local produce that you find on other Greek islands. Kalymnos is a little less developed than some of the other islands so don’t expect a great many fast food burger joints. Instead sample the delicious fresh produce in restaurants such as the Aegean, located between Myrties and Massouri, where you can enjoy slow cooked roast lamb, fresh water melon and refreshing salads. Head to any one of the scenic beach front tavernas for some excellent fresh fish and wash it down with a shot or two of ouzo.
