Overview of Montego Bay

Montego Bay is a fantastic holiday destination that has been much loved by British holidaymakers for many years. It is virtually impossible to sum up Montego Bay in few words as there is just so much on offer here. Montegonians (as the locals here are referred to) are extremely proud of their province and claim to live in ‘the friendly city’ of Jamaica, and from the minute you set foot on this beautiful island it’s clear to see why. Based in and around Jamaica’s largest and most famous resort, Montego Bay holidays appeal to holidaymakers looking to get away and enjoy some much needed sunshine and a bit of ‘me’ time. Montego Bay is home to a fabulous 10 mile stretch of beautiful golden sands, and as in all of the Caribbean resorts, the most exquisite crystal clear waters, but these are just a few of the reasons tourists flock here.

Getting there and getting around

There are regular flights to Montego Bay leaving from all major airports in the UK, with many holiday companies taking advantage of the resorts popularity and offering fantastic cheap holidays in Montego Bay all year round. The flight here is between 9 and 10 hours, but don’t let the flight time put you off as you will soon forget all about it when you see the beautiful destination you will be spending your holiday in. There is a bit of a problem with taxis in Montego Bay as some are not legally licensed yet still wait outside the airport arrivals hall to transport British tourists. It is recommended that you keep an eye out for red and white licence plates as this tells you whether or not the taxis are legitimate. The majority of tour operators arrange transfers from the airport to your chosen hotel via coach as you book your holiday, so that needn’t be a problem.

Things to do

Whatever you get a kick out of on your jollies, you are sure to find it in Montego Bay. With the sun shining all year round and the resort constantly buzzing with tourists, families and couples alike cannot stop themselves from travelling to this outstanding Jamaican resort. Scuba diving in particular is extremely popular here due to the excellent facilities all around the island and many licensed operators offer certification courses. The stunning stretch of coastline and clear warm waters offer a chance to see superb coral reefs filled with marine life. With an average year-round sea temperature of 27°C, Montego Bay is an underwater paradise for the keen diver.

Food and drink

Jamaican cuisine is sometimes extremely hot and fiery, however a surprising number of dishes use subtle spicing and are free of chilli peppers, which could be related to the growing increase of tourists who perhaps can’t handle a traditional spicy dish. Local dishes include meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables and range from spicy to plain. Restaurants are fantastic quality and offer really good prices.
