Holidays to New York are hugely popular, not only because of the fantastic sights and sounds of this amazing city or the great opportunities for shopping, but also because of the unique atmosphere that only a city like New York could elicit. To make the most of a New York holiday you should not only visit the famous sights such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park, but also immerse yourself in the culture of New York City. In the city’s bars and restaurants you can listen to the chatter of the people around you, sample the strong American coffee and snaffle some of the diverse cuisine on offer. Holidays in New York are popular all year round because although the winter months can become quite cold, in the run-up to Christmas the bright lights of the big city attract visitors from the UK to hit the stores of 5th Avenue for a pre-Christmas shopping spree and New York city break. Although New York City actually consists of the five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, most visitors are only familiar with Manhattan, which is the location of the towering skyscrapers and many of the city’s biggest attractions.

Getting to New York is simple enough with regular flights to New York from airports across the UK. New York City has two main serving hubs, JFK airport, which is 12 miles from the city centre and Newark Airport, which is a little further out at 16 miles. Both have decent connections to the city via public transport including trains and buses, and there are taxis and shuttle buses outside of the terminals. Although city breaks to New York are typically made up of tailor-made flight and hotel deals, New York package holidays are also available from some tour operators. New York is a great place to negotiate on foot, with so much going on you won’t want to miss a thing, but there are lots of transport options when you’re there, with the subway, buses and the famous yellow taxis to get you around.
New York holidays are an assault on the senses, with a seemingly endless array of attractions to absorb your every waking moment. If you choose a city break to New York you may only have three or four days to see and do as much as you can so it may be a good idea to make a check list. Some of the must-see attractions to visit on New York city breaks include the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and Central Park. Although no longer holding the prestigious title of ‘World’s tallest building’, the Empire State Building is an icon of the 20th century and one of the first places that visitors head to on a holiday to New York. The views from the top floor viewing platform are quite extraordinary. The Statue of Liberty is another of New York’s famous sights and can be viewed up close on Liberty Island. The statue, a gift from the people of France in 1886, welcomes all-comers to the United States of America. On 5th avenue you can shop till you drop in some of the well-known stores such as Saks, Kenneth Cole, Gucci, Prada and many more. You can even find the Tiffany jewellery store made famous by the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Take a relaxing stroll through Central Park and watch the locals playing baseball, jogging and taking some time out from the busy city.
A holiday in New York can be a culinary treat, with an enormous variety of food on offer from every corner of the world. There is also something to suit every budget, from cheap food stalls selling burgers, pizza, hot dogs or unusual treats of far eastern origin, to expensive upmarket restaurants serving the best haute cuisine. Some typical New York food includes bagels, which are best when they are fresh from the oven, pizza, made by Italian American pizzeria owners and hot dogs, the New York City classic. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan restaurants dotted throughout the city so non-meat eaters won’t feel left out.
