Take a Roman Holiday & Discover the Beauty of the Italian Capital

Choose from the following sections:

Overview of Rome

The incredible Italian capital is one of the most remarkable cities in the world for culture, history and for the sheer ‘wow-factor’. Holidays to Rome have enormous appeal because there is literally so much to see and do on a Rome holiday that visitors from every corner of the world flock to the city every year on city breaks to Rome to experience this superb blend of the ancient and the modern. Like a living, working open air museum, Rome is a city filled with ancient ruins and remarkable history, but also has a buzzing modern city culture that exudes a certain unmistakable Italian style. As you sit in street-side cafes and bistros overlooked by centuries old Roman buildings and ornate renaissance structures, you can watch the stylish Italians going about their daily business, zipping past at alarming speeds on motorised scooters or plodding the busy streets of their nation’s capital. Holidays in Rome are best enjoyed in the spring time when the temperature is warm but not oppressively hot for sightseeing.

Getting to Rome and getting around

Rome has two main serving airports for flights from the UK. Flights to Rome Fiumicino Airport, also known as Leonardo da Vinvi Airport, are available from a number of UK airports including Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Manchester and Belfast. Rome flights take in the region of two and a half hours from London. Search travel.co.uk for Rome holiday packages or book one of our tailor-made hotel deals combined with cheap flights to Rome. Low cost airlines such as Easyjet and Rynair offer a number regional airport flights. Rome is small enough to get around on foot in the historic centre but there is plenty of public transport available including buses, trams, trains and a metro system.

Things to do in Rome

There is so much to see and do on Rome holidays that you could easily spend weeks there and still find things to see. However, most people that choose a holiday in Rome tend to opt for a long weekend stay or perhaps a week at most. On long weekend city breaks, Rome has certain sights that are must-see attractions. The Colosseum is Rome’s most famous structure and has withstood centuries of pillaging, earthquakes and modern day tourism to remain the city’s foremost symbol of ancient Rome. Although it is not the working arena that is once was, the skeletal framework that remains still inspires thoughts of gladiatorial contests and baying crowds. Rome’s Spanish Steps are another hugely popular attraction, which wind their way up from the baroque fountain at the Piazza di Spagna to the Church of Santa Trinit dei Monti. If you choose to visit in spring the steps are decorated with beautiful pink azaleas. Despite being one of the smallest piazzas in Rome, city break visitors are always drawn to the Piazza di Trevi because of its famous fountain that was built in honour of Pope Clement XII. If you toss a coin into the water it is supposed to guarantee a return trip to Rome! Along with a massive array of other beautiful buildings and churches, the Sistine Chapel with its incredible Michelangelo frescoes and the Vatican museums ensure Rome breaks have seemingly endless possibilities.

Food and drink in Rome

Like any major European city, holidays in Rome offer an enormous range of cuisine from across the globe. However, ‘when in Rome...’ you have the perfect opportunity to sample some delectable Italian classics the country’s capital city. If you want to go really upmarket the Michelin-starred La Terrazza offers classic Italian dishes with a modern twist and superb views of the Seven Hills of Rome and the beautiful dome of St Peter’s. If you are looking for perfect thin and crispy Italian pizza, Il Leoncino is just the place, with quick service and delicious pizzas. Arancia Blu is the city’s best vegetarian restaurant and offers traditional Italian country cooking such as potato ravioli and aubergine parmigiana wrapped in pastry.
