Getting there and getting around

Symi unfortunately doesn’t have its own airport, therefore flights to Symi actually fly into Rhodes International Airport. Once arrived into Rhodes you will be transfered to the island of Symi via ferry or catamaran, which takes approximately 30 minutes. You can fly into Rhodes Airport from many airports across the UK and prices are very cheap. Hotels in Symi tend to be 3-star properties and are often run by friendly Greek families. You will get a more personalised service at these properties as they don’t cater to many guests at given time. Getting around Symi is usually done on foot, although the area has a lot of steep inclines, which is a consideration for those with walking difficulties. You can use a taxi service, but finding one is sometimes difficult. There are regular ferries and boats that come here, which are ideal if you wish to travel to another island and see a bit more of Greece.

Things to do

Everything about Symi oozes quietude, and it’s hard to not get lost in yourself whilst enjoying Symi holidays. A tranquil day out is a visit to Chorio. An old pathway leads you up there from the Yialos where the harbour is situated. Ensure you pack your walking shoes as there are around 300 steps to climb up before you reach this pretty little landmark. Don’t let these steps put you of as it gives you the opportunity to enjoy the amazing views over the harbour. You pass traditional bakeries, a few small shops and some beautiful classical buildings. Once you reach the top of the steps you will be greeted by a selection of restaurants and bars, so a cooling drink can be your goal to climb to the end.

The food and drink in Symi is very much all about typical Greek cuisine. The quaint tavernas in Symi are steeped in authentic charm and give holidaymakers the prospect of trying some of the mouth-watering delicacies that Symi has to offer. However if you prefer to stick to the food that you’re more used to, the harbour is home to a selection of eateries that serve an array of International food.
