Airtours was created when a man called David Crossland bought his second travel agency business, which he purchased from Albert and Ivy Roberts who had registered it using their initials, A.I.R. Tours. Airtours is one of the UK’s largest tour operators, going to over 800 popular holiday destinations and serving over 4 million customers a year. Launched in March 1991 with just five aircraft, Airtours International Airways was to be the in-house airline of Airtours Holidays. In 1993, Airtours acquired Aspro Holidays which included Aspro's Inter-European Airways. This acted to further strengthen the process of merging companies that was then becoming popular among UK holiday companies. In May 2002 Airtours rebranded under the new company name of MyTravel Group PLC. This included a name change for Airtours International and Premiair to MyTravel Airways.

MyTravel Group was founded under the Airtours brand in 1972, when David Crossland bought a series of small travel agencies in Lancashire. The group started operating package holidays and launched its own in-house charter airline MyTravel Airlines, in the early 1980s. The merger brings together brands which include Thomas Cook, Airtours, Neckermann, Condor, Ving, Direct Holidays and Sunquest. Thomas Cook Group plc is a travel company created on 19 June 2007 by the merger of Thomas Cook AG and MyTravel Group plc. From the merger, the businesses of Thomas Cook Group plc has a combined fleet of 97 owned and leased aircraft, over 3,000 shops, 32,722 employees, and over 19.1 million annual customers. This new Travel group became the second largest travel company in Europe, behind TUI, and the largest in the UK.
