The airport in Aldergrove began in 1917 as a Royal Flying Corps training establishment throughout the First World War and stayed open once the war was over for the RAF. In 1933 it became Northern Ireland’s civil airport conducting regular services for the public. The RAF remained at Aldergrove during the Second World War and it played an important role for the Coastal Command. In October 1963 the decision was made to move more civil flights to Aldergrove from other local airport because the site was bigger and more able to deal with bad weather conditions and in 1983 the airport was renamed into Belfast International Airport.
