Bournemouth Airport opened originally as a Royal Air Force station in Hurn, formally known as Hurn Airport. In August 1941 while performing its wartime duties, Bournemouth hosted aircrafts such as Spitfires, Wellingtons and Typhoons. In 1942 the airport became a base for a number of American squadrons. By the ending of the war in 1944 Bournemouth airport transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and became the UK’s only intercontinental airport going to destinations such as Accra, Cairo, Calcutta, Johannesburg, New York, Sydney and Washington, but only until the opening of Heathrow Airport on the 1st of January 1946. Bournemouth Airport had a moment of fame in April 1996 when the new longer runway was official opened with Concorde being the first aircraft to fly in; thousands came to see the craft land.
