In 1936 Coventry Airport was opened, during the Second World War the airport was used as a fighter station for the Royal Air Force and was named RAF Baginton, but the life of the airport was short lived, in 1940 the airport was damaged in the Luftwaffe bombing of Coventry. When the war ended in 1945 the airport was able to return into a civil use as a passenger and freight terminal, and in the 1950’s began flying to the Channel Islands. The airport was sold by Coventry City Council to Air Atlantique in the late 1980s, who in turn sold it on to TUI AG in February 2004, who began scheduled low cost cheap flights in April under the brand name of Thomsonfly.
