The airport began as Royal Air Force Station, called Middleton-St-George in 1941. It was decided that Middleton-St-George would close down due to the ending of the war in 1963 but the local authorities saw potential in the old airfield to become a civil airport, so it went ahead and the RAF left on 17th April 1964. The terminal Teesside International Airport was opened in 1966 by Queen Margaritha of Sweden and became very popular with local people wanting to get away to sunnier areas. In September 2004 Teesside International Airport changed its name to Durham Tees Valley Airport, this name change was only a small part of a new multi-million pound scheme to make sure the airport was improving and growing all the time, also the renaming of Durham Tees Valley Airport assisted in locating it on the international travel map.
Durham Tees Valley Airport can be accessed from the A1(M), A19 and the A66 and located only 6 miles east of Darlington, on the A67. Durham Tees Valley parking is located at the front entrance of the terminal building, however parking can be expensive, so now there is a ‘drop off-pick up’ car park which is free for up to 20 minutes and can be found to the side of the terminal building. Once your there you can get around by either public buses, taxis, car hire including well known companies such as Avis, Europcar and Hertz. April 2005 the airport launched a new shuttle bus service which runs from the airport directly to Darlington train station (7 miles) and the town centre. Other facilities includes two Travelex Bureau de change outlets, a cashpoint, pay-as-you-go internet kiosks located throughout the terminal (including Wireless), an information desk to help you with any problems and is fully accommodated for people with disabilities, wheelchairs are available and should be requested when booking your flight.
