Edinburgh Airport started its life as a British air defence base in the First World War. In 1918 the Royal Air Force was formed and the airfield was bought by the Ministry of Defence who called the base RAF Turnhouse; it was used throughout the Second World War. After the war, the airport was used to transport commercial goods until it was taken over by BAA (British Airports Authority) in 1971. The present terminal building was constructed and was opened by the Queen in 1977. The airport has just celebrated its 30th Birthday in May 2007 and is now the 8th largest airport in the UK, with an increasing number of flights from Edinburgh every year.
Edinburgh Airport deals with over 40 airlines and goes to over 100 destinations all around the world, with 8.8 million passengers going through the airport in a year. The airport is located 8 miles west of the city centre and is just off the A8 which can be easily reached by the M9 and M90. Edinburgh Airport parking facilities include long and short stay car parks, which are located next to the terminal, where valet parking is now also available. If you are booked on Edinburgh flights, there are shuttle buses that can take you to and from the town centre called Airlink, or catch a shared mini bus that will take you wherever you want to go. The airport also has many car hire companies including Europcar, Hertz and Avis. Edinburgh facilities also include restaurants, bars, foreign exchange, internet points, children’s play areas and duty free shopping and they provide for people with disabilities, including parking bays, toilets and assistance where needed, which should be organized when you are booking Edinburgh flights and holidays.
