Fly away on holiday from Gatwick airport

The name ‘Gatwick’ can be dated back to 1241 when it was the name of a Manor House and grounds upon which the airport is built today. In 1890 the site was sold to the Gatwick Race Course Company, but when the Surrey Aero Club was formed in 1930 they became the new occupiers and used the long grass strips to teach flying lessons. The aerodrome was then sold on again and plans were put forward to turn it into an airport. In 1934 the Air Ministry approved commercial flights from Gatwick. By 1936 the new airport had come along way, providing scheduled flights from Gatwick to around Europe and a new circular terminal had been built called “The Beehive”, designed by Frank Hoar. The Beehive had a 130-yard- long subway built underneath it, which joined the airport to Victoria Train Station, so passengers had a sheltered direct route. During the Second World War the airport was needed by the Royal Air Force and once again became a training school as well as used as an aircraft repair and maintenance facility.

Information on London Gatwick Airport

Once the War was over the Government decided in 1952 that Gatwick was going to be redeveloped into an alternative to Heathrow Airport and in 1956 a £7.8 million renovation began. On the 9th of June Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Gatwick Airport, which was the world's first airport with a direct railway link, and was one of the first to have an enclosed pier-based terminal that let passengers onto the aircraft without going outdoors. London Gatwick Airport is now the second largest and busiest in the UK after Heathrow. Gatwick is located 28 miles south of London, and is easily reached by the M23 and A23 motorways. There is also the Gatwick Express train which links the airport to Victoria Station in 30 minutes. Gatwick Airport has a North and South Terminal, which are linked by a free transit system 24 hours a day. Gatwick facilities include a large range of shops and restaurants and rest areas. Gatwick parking options include long and short stay car parks and a valet parking service. The airport is also fully accessible for Disabled passengers.
