London Heathrow Airport began its life as a military airfield during the First World War and in 1943 the airport went under the control of the Ministry of Air and was made into a Royal Air Force transfer base and they began building runways in 1944, the airport was named after the hamlet ‘Heath Row’ which had to be demolished to make way for the for the new airport. Heathrow opened for civilian use on the 31st of May 1946 even though there were no terminal buildings and passengers checked in temporary tents! The first terminal building was opened in 1955 and over the next 31 years the fast growing airport produced three other terminals, two of which were opened by Queen Elizabeth II.
