Kosmar Holidays were founded in 1982 by a gentleman known as Kostas Markou and the name Kosmar was founded using the first three letters of his first and last name. In April 2006 Excel Airways bought Kosmar Holidays however Mr Markou still remained with the company. Airlines such as Air Malta and British Airways are the typical airlines that Kosmar use as they continue to expand their passenger intake. In September 2008, the XL Leisure Group, including Kosmar, filed bankruptcy in the face of spiralling aviation fuel costs.

The Kosmar Holiday brand specialized in holidays to Greece having been established as one of the best providers of Greece Holidays for over twenty years. They sold cheap holidays in over 80 different resorts in Greece, from the small, quiet locations to the more lively and upbeat places. Kosmar also operated package holidays to Turkey and Cyprus, which proved to be just as popular as Greece. Kosmar Holidays tended to feature direct holidays staying mostly in self catering studios, apartments and bed and breakfast hotels, and with bargain holidays to the Pelion Peninsular coming on board, Kosmar were becoming increasingly popular before the bankrupcy of the XL Leisure Group.
