Manchester Airport is one of the UK’s biggest and most well known airports and is the most popular hub for international flights from Manchester and the northwest. Opening to the public in 1938, it was named ‘Ringway Airport’ but during the Second World War it became officially known as RAF Ringway due to the military presence on the runway. In 1986 the title of Manchester International Airport was adopted. Originally Manchester Airport had only one runway, but in 2001 a second was opened at a cost of 172 million pounds. Manchester has three terminals adjacent to one another, all of which are well designed to make them comfortable and accessible for passengers to take holidays from Manchester Airport.
Located in the County of Greater Manchester, Manchester Airport is said to be the fourth busiest in the UK. The passenger throughput of the airport is quite high for a regional airport and in 2004 Manchester ranked 48th place in the world for handling the most passengers that year, overcoming over 48,000 other airports. Also in 2006, a record 234,835 Manchester flights departed, which put the airport third behind London Heathrow and London Gatwick for the volume of departures. Flights from Manchester Airport continue to prove popular with travellers throughout the north. There is a huge range of European and long haul flights from Manchester with charter airlines such as Mytravel, First Choice and Thomas Cook, as well as scheduled flights from Manchester on Air France, Virgin and low cost carriers such as Jet2.
Getting to and from Manchester couldn’t be easier, as they have their very own railway station and trains arrive and depart from all over Britain. There is east access by car from the M56 and plenty of Parking at Manchester Airport. Parking is available in long stay and short stay and with a huge choice of parking spots and premier options available for speed and convenience. Also available is a handful of Manchester Hotels, from the 4 Star Radisson SAS hotel located directly on site of the airport and offering direct access to all three of Manchester Airports terminals, to the Holiday Inn, which is just minutes away from the Airport on a courtesy shuttle bus.
