Known as the tenth largest airport in the UK, Newcastle Airport is a firm favourite departure point for people in the North East of England. Situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, the Airport is in fact owned by seven local authorities, Durham County Council, Gateshead MBC, City of Newcastle, North Tyneside MBC, Northumberland County Council, South Tyneside MBC and City of Sunderland, which is a rare occurrence.
Opened in 1935, Newcastle Airport consisted of a small grass runway, a workshop and garage. Developed in the 1950’s, flights from Newcastle began to be used for package holidays creating a rise in the income of passengers, however flights at this point were to the Isle of Man, The Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. By the end of the 1960’s, Newcastle added another runway and control tower to meet with the demands of the increase in package holidays that was occurring in this era, creating more Newcastle flights.
In the 1970’s flights from Newcastle Airport increased exceedingly along with the number of passengers, which was a total of 700,000 annually by this time. This was due to the airport being upgraded to Regional International Airport status and the beginning of US jumbo jets. By 1980, the airport was bringing in a whopping 1.24 million passengers and adding further development to the airport facilities.
To this day Newcastle flights depart to over 86 destinations worldwide and accommodate 5 million passengers a year. Reaching the Airport is straightforward by travelling up the A1 and following all relevant road signs, Newcastle parking is very accessible and offers both onsite and offsite parking at very reasonable prices. Also passengers are able to travel by train with the Airport being linked via Metro to Newcastle Central Station. Lastly a good option is staying overnight in a hotel, Newcastle offers many hotels in its City Centre which are only a few minutes’ drive away or you could opt to stay in the onsite hotel ‘The Britannia’ , either have easy access to the airport.
