East Midlands Airport lies between the cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, the airport was originally a Royal Air Force station, called RAF Castle Donington. Due to the ending of the Second World War the RAF Station was taken out of service in 1946, the airport was then purchased by the local government in 1964 and renamed East Midlands Airport due to the location and opened in April in 1965. In 2004 the airport was renamed again to Nottingham East Midlands Airport due to the fact that people unfamiliar to the area could not identify with the term ‘East Midlands’ and not know whereabouts in the UK it was. The reason for adding ‘Nottingham’ in the name, even though it wasn’t the closest city, was that it was more international recognized.
