Prestwick Airport is situated just 32 miles from Glasgow City Centre and is one of Scotland’s fastest growing Airports. History suggests that the site where Prestwick is currently based became a home to aircrafts in the early 1900’s, some saying 1934; however it could have been as early as 1913. A handful of small aeroplanes were using meadows located right next to the Prestwick Airport plot as a landing strip. Soon after this, a gentleman named David McIntyre acquired 348 acres of this Ayrshire Countryside and set up a business called ‘The Scottish Aviation Ltd’, an aircraft manufacturing company. In only a year, offices were quickly built along with a small but adequate control tower.
It wasn’t long after that WW2 intervened, and with this came the delivery of American aircraft, which meant that the site then developed into a major airport with as many as 300 aircraft arriving daily. Many famous aeroplanes were built at Prestwick right up until as recently as 1998, when the production of the BAE Jet stream ceased, which was a huge talking point for Glasgow at the time. Prestwick Airport is also home to the Palace of Engineering, built in a location called Bellahouston Park in 1938; the impressive building still stands to this day and can be seen on the North side of the airport. It is considered a renowned landmark for Scotland.
Prestwick airport operates with only one main terminal and serves 4 different airlines to over 20 destinations worldwide, handling over 1.9 million passengers every year. Prestwick flights are on the rise and the airport is hoping to increase the amount of airlines that currently operate to a much higher number, making flights from Prestwick a lot more accessible to people in the area. For the past ten years there has been a massive growth in passenger traffic passing through Prestwick, in particular due to no-frills airlines such as Ryanair, who use Prestwick Airport as their main base.
Prestwick parking is ample with plenty of options. You can choose from either the short or long stay car parks, which are based on site of the airport, or perhaps the off airport car parking for a cheaper option. For those who like to begin their holiday the minute they reach the airport, there is also the Prestwick meet and greet parking option, allowing you to concentrate solely on catching that flight. Prestwick Airport has many fantastic deals on offer, all of which can be found easily at Travel.co.uk.
