Southampton Airport is the 20th largest airport in the UK. Based in a small town in Hampshire called Eastleigh, just outside of Southampton itself, it brings in equivalent to 1.5 million passengers every year. Before 1932 Southampton Airport was home to thousands of refugees, who were supposed to be travelling back to the USA where they were originally visiting, however Immigration Law came into play during this time therefore leaving them all stranded, until Atlantic Park was born, a hostel built to cater for all the helpless folk stuck in England. Before long a school, a library and even a synagogue were all built there. As 1932 approached the Southampton Corporation purchased the site and demolished the hostel, replacing it with the Southampton Muncipal Airport. Starting as a cross channel car ferry service, it eventually built its first concrete runway in 1965.
At the road entrance into Southampton airport stands a near full size sculpture of K5054, the prototype Spitfire. The sculpture was built very recently in 2004 and commemorates the first test flights of the Supermarine Spitfire that were conducted at the airport in 1936.
Today there are plenty of cheap flights from Southampton Airport available, with over 14 airlines flying to over 46 destinations around the world from there. Easily accessible from every direction, the airport is well signposted and offers both short and long stay offers on Southampton car parking.
