Getting there and Getting Around

Holidays to Montenegro begin at one of two main airports, Podgorica, which is located 7.5 miles from the city of the same name, or Tivat Airport which is only 2.5 miles away from the main city. Both airports offer ample facilities on-site including restaurants, shops and tourist offices. Flights to Montenegro are mainly operated by the national airline Montenegro Airlines and can be flown from most major airports in the UK. Once you arrive in Montenegro, a company called JAT runs inexpensive buses between airports and city centres, so you don’t need to worry about transfers if they haven’t already been taken care of by your tour operator. There are over 5000km of roads in Montenegro so needless the say the most popular mode of transport over there is the car. The two major roads are the Adriatic motorway and the motorway that links the north to the south. Car hire offices are scattered all around Montenegro and the locals even drive on the same side of the road as we do in Britain. They do say however that driving on an evening is unadvisable due to the poor conditions of the road. One road in particular, named ‘the two lane Moraca Canyon’, is a notoriously bad road and should be avoided wherever possible.

Things to Do

Montenegro has an extensive and delightfully scenic coastline with a fantastic series of sandy coves, along with incredible mountain scenery and beautiful scenic lakeside trails that are enjoyed by keen walkers . A popular little town to visit in Montenegro is Perast, built on the shores of Boka Kotorska, its ruins date back to 3500 B.C. Perast was the only town other than Kotow that didn’t surrender to the Turks and therefore earned a reputation for being a town of fierce warriors. Another well known site is the tomb of Njegos, he was a Montenegrin ruler, a bishop, a poet and a philosopher, he dreamt all his land would be free of Turkish or Austrian Oppression; he died in 1851 and was buried in the resort of Cetinje.

Food and Drink

Montenegrins will open their door as wide as they can in order to show a sign of hospitality, they are renowned for offering their guests the best food and drink they have in the house, reserve the best possible tables and do their best to ensure each and every holidaymaker that sets foot through their door is as comfortable as possible. Hospitality is second nature to the Montenegrin locals. The traditional dishes in Montenegro have a somewhat Italian flavour to them, which can be seen in the bread making style, cheese making and all those wines and spirits. Other influences come from Turkey, such as pita, burek and baklava. Kotor has an array of restaurants, for excellent pizza there’s an eatery called ‘Pasteria,’ it sits opposite the Cathedral of St Tripun in Start Grad in the old city and is said to have the best pizza on offer. If you’re more partial to haute cuisine and a warm setting, try the delightful Hotel Splendido in Prcanji or. The Galion, which sits on the water’s edge of Kotor Bay is said to be lovely little traditional setting.
